Important hotfix for Hyper-V 2008 R2 hosts before running 2012 in a VM

June 18, 2013

Noticed this this morning while browsing around the Technet page regarding upgrading domain controllers to Server 2012 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh994618.aspx#BKMK_WhatsNewAD) :

If you run Windows Server 2012 in a virtual machine on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V, apply the hotfix in KB article 2526776. Without applying this hotfix, you may experience one or more of the following issues:

  • The virtual machine stops responding.
  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 host computer displays a stop error message and restarts automatically. This behavior brings down all other running virtual machines together with the host computer.

I’m going to take a wild stab and say I think this might be a fairly common configuration, given that running Server 2012 in a VM to test and review,on existing infrastructure (likely to be 2008 R2) could be a good way to se what all the fuss is about. I was surprised to see this where it was, the page title doesn’t give it away. The fact that it might bring the host down on the spot, (possibly a production server maybe, why wouldn’t you?) with no clear reason, could induce a ‘squeaky’ moment…

EDIT – So that I might pass this on to colleagues, I went to open the link for the hotfix, and it seems to offer up a bad link. Might not be an issue anymore but worth bearing in mind if a host starts to go wobbly…
